MPEG4 AVC and DAT

What is MPEG4 AVC

Read more about MPEG4 AVC if you like. MPEG4 AVC is a standard for video compression developed by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) together with the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). The intent of the H.264/AVC project was to create a standard capable of providing good video quality at lower bit rates without increasing the complexity of design while providing enough flexibility to allow the standard to be applied to a wide variety of applications on a wide variety of networks and systems, including low and high bit rates, low and high resolution video, broadcast, DVD storage, RTP/IP packet networks, and ITU-T multimedia telephony systems.

What is DAT

Digital Audio Tape (DAT), is a signal recording and playback medium developed by Sony in the mid 1980s. DAT was used professionally due to its lossless encoding, which allowed a master tape to be created that was more secure and did not induce yet more tape noise (hiss) onto the recording. In the correct setup, a DAT recording could be created without even having to be decoded to analogue until the final output stage, since digital multi-track recorders and digital mixing consoles could be used to create a fully digital chain. In this configuration, it is possible for the audio to remain digital from the first AD converter after the mic preamp until it is in a CD player.
