AVI and Flash

What is AVI

To watch AVI files, your video players must not only support the AVI file format, but also the actual audio and video format. AVI is not a video format, it is just a container that holds audio and video data, packed together into a single file. The actual audio and video tracks inside the AVI file can be encoded using a variety of codecs. So for example when you put an MPEG-4 video track into the AVI file, the video playback software must support MPEG-4 video. If it does not support MPEG-4 video, the player will not be able to play the file. And even if it supports MPEG-4 video, it could still not work because there could be an unsupported codec FourCC.

What is Flash

Flash video is a container file format used to deliver video over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player (initially produced by Macromedia) versions 6-10. Flash Video content may also be embedded within SWF files. There are two different video file formats defined by Adobe Systems and supported in Adobe Flash Player: FLV and F4V. The audio and video data within FLV files are encoded in the same way as they are within SWF files. The latter F4V file format is based on the ISO base media file format and is supported starting with Flash Player 9 update 3.
