What is 3GPP

3GPP is in fact a multimedia file format. It was defined by 3GPP for use by high-speed wireless networks, or 3G cell phones. 3GPP, or 3rd Generation Partnership Project, is a collaboration of the telecommunication associations European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Association of Radio Industries and Businesses/Telecommunication Technology Committee (Japan), China Communications Standards Associations, Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (North America), and Telecommunications Technology Association (South Korea). Its purpose is to make globally applicable third generation (3G) mobile phone system specifications within the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) scope. These third generation specifications are based on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) specifications.

What is H.264/AVC

H.264/AVC is the latest block-oriented motion-compensation-based codec standard developed by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) together with the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), and it was the product of a partnership effort known as the Joint Video Team (JVT). The ITU-T H.264 standard and the ISO/IEC MPEG-4 AVC standard (formally, ISO/IEC 14496-10) are jointly maintained so that they have identical technical content.
